Just how big is Alaska?
571,951 sq mi. (1,4 81,353 sq km), equal to 1/5 of the continental United States.
Alaska is the farthest North, West, and East point of the United States. It crosses the international date line.
Purchased from Russia October 18, 1867 for two cents per acre ($7,200,000). Alaska joined the United States January 3, 1959 as the 49th State.

After finishing the Iditarod and beating breast cancer, Alaska's sweetheart DeeDee Jonrowe competed in the Ironman marathon in October, 2006. Our production team, armed with 2000 pounds of television and satellite gear, turned a 15-passenger van into a portable television station, anchoring our 5 O'Clock newscast from 5 different locations around the Big Island.
